ASMF14th 2020 TOUR – Press Release

The Australian Surf Movie Festival tour 2020 featuring SwellChasers from Swell and Back, a voyage into the best and greatest biggest swells of the past 3 years  5 Short Films – 5 Locations – The best surfers on the planet

For the first time in 3 years, the amaysim Australian Surf Movie Festival will return to the BIG SCREEN to venues across Australia, featuring 5 jaw-dropping films that capture the world’s best big wave surfers challenging the biggest waves on the planet.

Showings will take place in Nov-Dec 2020

The films feature an array of the world’s best big wave riders, including: Kai Lenny, Andrew Cotton, Matahi Drollet, Ross Clarke-Jones, Dan & Mick Corbett, Bradley Norris, Lucas Chumbo, Shane Ackerman, Ramon Navarro, Billy Kemper, Jake Osman and many more.

Renowned surf cinematographer Tim Bonython has spent the last 3 years chasing massive swell events for this year’s festival. It is an adventure that has taken him around the globe.

The footage Tim has collected, records some of the most ground-breaking historic scenes in recent big wave surfing memory. These include pioneering big wave surfer Kai Lenny riding the futuristic foil surfboard in gigantic surf at Jaws, and fellow big wave rider Rodrigo Koxa breaking the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever ridden.

“To see these big wave gladiators charging down monster waves is just the most exciting thing,” said Tim, who is not only the films’ main cinematographer, but also the founder of the event.

In these ambiguous times, the festival promises to bring audiences to the edge of their seats—and within the world’s wildest waves—injecting viewers with a much needed dose of awe and adrenaline. It’s what Tim’s done for decades, and with a stellar cast of hardcore chargers and spine-tingling swells, this year’s festival will be viewed as the best one yet.

The first film features big wave surfers at historic swell events at Cloudbreak in Fiji; the second, chasing a swell across the Pacific from Hawaii’s Jaws to California’s Mavericks.

The third, at Teahupo’o in Tahiti; the fourth, at The Right in Western Australia; the fifth, at Nazaré in Portugal; and the sixth, at Mullaghmore in Ireland.

Together these six films make up the 14th Edition of the ASMF festival.

All films featured are directed by Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award-winning cinematographer and multi-award winning surf film producer Tim Bonython, who has over four decades of experience filming and documenting surfing.

As Tim says, ‘watching monsters on the BIG SCREEN is the best place to view them’.
