Back in 2002, Tim Bonython contemplated the idea to revive the past. To bring back the good ol’ days and go on the road and show surf movies in pubs and clubs.
With the support of Quiksilver, the idea became a reality and the Australian Surf Movie Festival was born. In just a few short years, with his surf movie featured, Tim has grown the Australian Surf Movie Festival from its humble beginnings to sell-out crowds at large pub and club venues and in selected independent cinemas throughout Australia’s East Coast and international locations.
Now, 14 years on, the ASMF has cemented its reputation as a successful annual event as the only event touring independent surf movies on the big screen in cinemas, pubs and clubs around Australia since 2002.
It is an established event, a brand that has became an icon of modern day surf films shown on the big screen around Australia. It is a unique night out showing the latest footage from around the globe offering audiences an exclusive experience of “never seen before” footage. The event could also includes live music ( in live venue), door prizes and raffles.
Tim Bonython will himself host each event as live MC.
Over the years we have also supported many communities’ organisations and groups .
The ASMF objective is to bring surf movies to a wider audience, to share our passion and love of surfing in all its forms. In past years, it has helped to launch feature length surf films, such as Strapped, Flow, Blackwater: The Story of a Place Called Teahupo’o , May dayz, Immersion the Movie, Encoded, The Big Wave Project and this year, short documentaries which will take the viewers around the world and to witness the best and the greatest surf and ocean footage of the past 3 years. All films, directed and produced in-house by Tim Bonython Productions.
